“Gerer” — a dystopic uncial

Unique, organic, post-technological

Typography is personal again.

Before purchasing fonts like a sport, I was collecting pens. I still do.

Diving into fonts, I quickly understood that things could be incredibly more complex in the digital world. You cannot buy a font like you buy a pen.

If you go for a commercial font, of course you pay something, but you do not own anything. The license allows you to do certain things with the font to a certain extent. Mileage may vary, of course.

If you go for a libre font, you do not have to pay anything but do not own anything either.

A pen is not just a tool, it is a collectible item, it can be a piece of art. You can create other things using it. I observe the NFT (Non Fungible Token) phenomenon. Looks like a race to ownership and uniqueness in the digital world.

What is ownership anyway? I would define it as the Romans did: usus (use), fructus (make profit from it) and abusus (sell or destroy). So far, when you buy a font, you can use it and indirectly make profit from it, if you do graphic design with it for instance. The same goes with libre fonts. Some commercial licences are transferable. Whether you can make profit upon this transfer is sometimes unclear.

Therefore whether a font, licensed in those terms, could be an asset or not is debatable.

My experiment is about selling the fonts as fully as possible that is with transfer of ownership on the files. I make a difference between the typeface (the drawing, the concept, the design) and the font (the file). I am still the owner of the typeface, and will probably keep exclusive the name of this typeface but from there anyone who would purchase the font would be owner of his/her/their specific copy, so could use it the way he/she/they see fit, but also rent, sell, destroy, make it anything else, based on one copy per purchase basis.

The price will be 20 €, regardless of who buys it.

Each copy comes with an exclusive glyph, other buyers will not have.

There will be 100 copies. The font can be open sourced by any buyer who purchase the amount of 100 copies, therefore 2000 €.
